Having to encounter these little critters on your way while surfing the Internet wastes your time. Popups are another way for people with good and bad intentions alike make their way into your personal lives. If you like what they offer you might click on them, if you don't you still have to close them anyway.
Maybe this is not the best advice I could give you but still I want to share them to you.
It is better to use the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. I make sure that I am never going to encounter any popups at all. Never. And also, you have to practice vigilant surfing. You don't visit websites known for phishing and the likes. If you do, just watch out for yourself. Remember that this does not replace to have a good AV software.
What I do is I install these Firefox addons: Noscript, Adblock-plus, Flashblock, and Stealther. When you get it installed you have to restart FF to make the installation complete. Then you have to configure each addons:
1. Noscript: Look for Tools on the main menu of your browser >: click Addons >: select noscript >: Preferences >: Whitelist. In here you enter the addresses of trusted sites that you want to be whitelisted. >: Plugins: Tick these additional options for the untrusted: Forbid Java, Forbid Adobe Flash, Forbid other plugins, Block every object coming from a site marked as untrusted, all else default >: then click OK.
2. Adblock-plus: After restart you will be asked to subscribe, just tick one of its options >: then click OK.
3. Flashblock: Enable flashblock if it's not yet abled. You can also add addresses who can load flash content. Just whitelist them. >: click OK.
4. Stealther: On default, all are checked. You have to untick Cookies then click OK. Then go to Firefox Main menu >: Edit >: Preferences >: Content tab: You can add exceptions who can load popups and images. Privacy tab: Untick Accept cookies from sites and also you can add exceptions.
Then configure the main options of your browser FF. You can open that in 3 ways: First, you click on Edit >: Preferences. Second, just press (Alt + O) not zero. If it doesn't show up, or you are using the lower versions, or you can't find the Options on Edit, you can look for it on Tools >: Options.
If Firefox Preferences is now open click on Privacy tab >: untick Cookies. Click on Exceptions >: and enter the addresses of your preferred websites who needs cookies to load properly. Just choose one of these 3 status options: Disabled, Allow for session and Enabled, for that particular address. You can add more addresses and do the same. If you are finish click on Close.
(Optional): On Advance tab >: click General: Tick on Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page then click Close. (This is usually useful when a website redirected you to see their ads first before proceeding to your destination). Then after that you're good to go. Happy surfing! :)
